天主教教宗方濟各25日來到美國最大城市紐約，赴聯合國大會發表演講。教宗在演說中，呼籲世界各國領袖對窮人伸出援手、對抗氣候變遷、並終止導致難民逃往歐洲的衝突。

教宗抵達聯合國總部時，聯合國秘書長潘基文和夫人在場迎接。潘基文提及教宗過去就社會公義、氣候變化、生活質素和尊嚴所提呼籲，讚揚教宗的謙遜、仁慈鼓舞了許多人。

聯合國今年成立70周年，方濟各是第5位參訪的教宗，且是第一位在聯合國大會上演說的教宗。聯合國總部25日首度升起由黃、白兩色組成的教廷國旗。

教宗以母語西班牙文演講，探討對和平的迫切需求、難民的苦境，貧窮與政府失能引致戰爭與移民。

聯合國自25日至27日舉行「可持續發展特別峰會」，討論17個涉及廣泛的全球目標。第一項議程即是消除全世界各種形式的貧困。教宗關心貧窮恰與議程相呼應。

除了赴聯大演說，教宗當天還拜訪了世貿中心遺址紀念廣場。教宗在此與一些受難者家屬會晤，然後前往九一一國家紀念博物館，主持跨宗教紀念儀式。

25日下午的行程，則展現教宗喜愛與平民接觸的一面，首先拜訪東哈林區的「天使之后聖母學校」。此區是西裔社區，學校位在公共住宅區裡面。

教宗與學童相見歡，也為住在這裡的合法以及非法移民祈福。接著，教宗將隨車隊穿越中央公園，最後在麥迪遜廣場舉行戶外彌撒，而後結束紐約的行程。
